The Mahalakshmi Pooja or Vrat is a 16–day long period in the Hindu year which commences four days after Ganesh Chaturthi, i.e. the Ashtami Tithi, Shukla Paksha of the Bhadrapada month. Dedicated to Devi Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, devotees worship her Gaja Lakshmi form.
Men and women who observe this Vrat must maintain celibacy for sixteen days. They must rise early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Then, they must do Sankalpa (vow) to observe the fast with sincerity and devotion.

Mahalakshmi Vrat is observed for sixteen consecutive days which ends on Krishna Ashtami during Ashwin month (as per Purnimanta calendar followed in North India).
